Growing up and living in Scotland.

Hello. My name is John Luckwell and I was born in Glasgow in 1950. Yes, I'm an oldie! I grew up on the Scottish West Coast near Helensburgh in a wee village called Clynder, famous for McGruers boatyard which built many beautiful and high-quality yachts and workboats.

I wanted to write here a wee bit about my life in and around Scotland because I greatly appreciate the work that has gone into this website by my friend Chris. No matter where you are raised, you can never know all there is to know about your own area, so Live Breathe Scotland has informed me about so many aspects of my country previously unknown to me.

I left my Gareloch-side home in 1968 to join the RAF as an electronic engineering tradesman and although I experienced many other countries, I was fortunate to spend most of my career in Scotland, firstly in Fife and latterly in Moray.

I'm often asked about my favourite part of Scotland and my answer is always "all of it"! I have had many lovely holidays in England and the scenery in the Yorkshire Dales, Cumbria, Northumberland and Cornwall, for example, is beautiful. However, in my opinion, Scotland trumps them all!

Despite being born a Weegie, I have no desire to return to the Central Belt, having lived and worked in Moray since 1978 and realising that we are in the 'gateway to the Highlands' which is where my heart really lies. We are taking our 4th holiday on the Isle of Lewis this October, staying at a friend's flat overlooking Stornoway Harbour. I can't wait! Expect some drone images!

We have holidayed 7 times on Skye, 6 of those being being at Kylerhea which is where the famous turntable ferry arrives from Glenelg on the mainland.

My wife Margaret and I no longer feel the need to queue in airports to fly to hot destinations. I often say that with my 'Weegie DNA' I'm not made to cope with temperatures over 20 deg! So, Scotland for us has everything we look for ... gorgeous scenery, friendly people and an abundance of wide-open spaces.

In conclusion, keep a close eye on this website ... you will always learn something new from it!

Thanks for kicking off the forum, John.  To those who don’t know, John is an excellent drone pilot and has provided many of the images used on this website.

Check out some of his videos on his Youtube channel; the latest one on Findhorn Bay is fantastic.

Well,   I just replied,  at length to your post,  but sadly it's not here.     ;-(      Maybe I'll try again another time.

Love Scotland.     I live in the US,  in the South,  in Alabama.     Bye for now.     ~Margie

Hi Margie, thanks for writing a reply.

Unfortunately, the system can log you out if you take some time to write your message.  If you write in another program and then copy and paste it here it can save some bother if you get logged out.

Be sure to come back sometime; we would love to hear your story.
