Sandstone Cafe, Dornoch
Over the years, my wife and I have stayed at Grannie's Heilan' Hame Holiday Park many times, we have tried many of the local places to eat, but our favourite by far is Sandstone Cafe, formerly known as the Dornoch Patisserie.
Our favourite place to eat in Dornoch
From the outside, it looks like a quiet, unassuming place, but as soon as you walk in the door, you are met with a warm welcome and a display cabinet loaded with the most amazing homemade cakes.
The waitress will seat you as you enter and give you a basic but fantastic menu full of delicious things to choose from.
Lunch!
I had the Glazed Ham, Cheddar and Tomato Panini, and my wife had the Tuna & Sweetcorn Melt. I think they bake their own bread onsite, they are really nice. I have had the Ploughman's and Baguettes here before, too, both fantastic. The side salads have a really nice dressing on them.
The kids always choose the "Children's Platter" which contains a sandwich along with sliced apple, popcorn, carrot and celery sticks, cucumber and raisins. We would call this a "wee feast" in our household! The sandwiches have a variety of fillings from Ham, Cheese, Peanut Butter and Jam.
We also ordered an extra side of chips as recommended by the waitress; really nice chips maybe better than a chip shop.
Desert!
No trip to Sandstone Cafe would be complete without having one of their beautiful puddings. I'm a sucker for the apple pie and really pushed the boat out this time with extra cream AND ice cream.
My wife had a big slice of Jaffa cake cake!
The kids decided to have a 3 scoop Ice Cream Sundae each; it's a lot of ice cream, though, 2 scoops probably would have been more than enough for my kids, aged 11, 9 and 5.
The puddings really are next level, and you can tell a lot of time, love and effort is put in to making them.
Q&As
Is there parking at Sandstone Cafe?
No, you can park on the street (High St) parallel to the cathedral, but on very busy days, it might not be possible. There is a bigger car park a short distance away on Meadow Parks Road. There are also some spaces available on Argyll Street.
Do Sandstone Cafe offer takeaway?
Yes, I think they do but have always sat in myself.
Paying the bill
The bill was expensive at £65, but we all had drinks, mains and puddings, but as a special meal out at our favourite place in Dornoch I don't grudge it considering the food is so good.
The staff are so friendly and give off good vibes. A walk down to the beach is highly recommended afterwards.
